Communities in Adamawa have been urged to revamp the culture of collective sanitation activities in their surroundings to protect them from contracting diseases.
Adamawa State Commissioner for Water Resources Ayuba Audu Tanko gave the charge during a commemoration of World Toilet Day held at Anguwan Kabawa, Vinikilang in Girei local government area.
Repressented by the Director Hydrology and Hydrogeology in the Ministry, Mr Daniel Yohanna, the Commissioner advocated for the awareness on the importance of toilets, their construction and upkeep.
He stressed the need for hygiene behaviour change through an institutionalised good hygiene practices at all levels.
Alhaji Ayuba who reiterated commitment of Government towards to providing people with portable drinking water, lauded the initiative of the ST WASH in observing the world toilet in Vinikilang.
Earlier in a welcome address, a Volunteer from Garga Foundation Mr Chahandi Andrew Lumbonyi noted that the World Toilet Day is celebrated annually on nineteen November to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis and help achieve Sustainable Development Goal six, which promises sanitation for all by twenty-twenty thirty.
He called on community leaders to enlighten members on the need to keep their homes and environment clean as well as ensure regular environmental sanitation, construction and use of toilets with handwashing facilities.
On his part, a Program Support from Small Town Water Sanitation and Hygiene ST WASH, Saadu Yahya encouraged the community to embibe the culture of Hand washing with soap after using toilet to avert contracting with communicable diseases.
Also Speaking, the Head of Water Supply and Quality control Small Towns water Supply and sanitation Agency, Ibrahim Sambo advocated for increased investment in the WASH sector from household heads, communities, and the local government area.
There were response from leaders in Vinikilang commending ST WASH for it’s efforts and soliciting for more water facility in the area.
The theme for this year’s world toilet day is ‘’accelerating change” which reminded people on the need to act faster to ensure water sanitation and hygiene WASH for all.
