CCN Collaborates UNICEF in fighting Violence against Women and girls

Christian Council of Nigeria CCN in Collaboration with United Nations Children Fund UNICEF under the European Union, United Nation Spotlight Initiative have organised a stakeholders Meeting to chart ways of ending the violence against Women and girls.

The meeting held at Muna Hotels Yola has as its theme “The role of church in ending violence against women and girls”, was attended by various church leaders.

In a remark, the General Secretary of CCN, Reverend Evans Onyemara described gender-based violence as   physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, psychological abuse, among others which is detrimental to the social wellbeing of women and girls in the society.

He expressed regret that some women themselves are responsible in the perpetuation of the heinous practices against their fellow women.

Reverend Evans said violence against women and girls can have serious physical, mental, economic, and social repercussions.

According to him, the aim of the meeting is to create awareness among members of churches in Adamawa to rise and condemn all kinds of violence against women and girls which became a monster in the society.

In a keynote address, the Adamawa State Chairman of Christian Council of Nigeria CCN, Dean Reverend Harimas Othniel expressed concern on the increasing cases of sexual violence against Women and girls and called for collaborative effort in the fight against the menace.

He called on the participants to use the knowledge acquired to educate other members on ways of checking the violence against women and girls.

Some participants, of the meeting Archbishop Marcus Ibrahim Anfani of Jos Anglican Communion Church Diocese and Hellen James former state Chairperson Women Wing CCN described the meeting as timely considering the increasing cases of violence in the society.

The project Coordinator of CCN in Adamawa Mr Kennedy Muzong expressed hope that at the end of the workshop the participants will be fully aware of the rights of Women and girls and the need to protect them against all forms of Violence in the society.
