Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority Yola has observed this year’s World Rivers Day with call on Public to Protect the rivers.

Twenty-twenty two World Rivers Day with the theme” Rights of Rivers” was celebrated at Ngurore, Mayo-Inne upstream in Yola south local government area.

Speaking during the ceremony, Managing Director Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority Yola, Engineer Abubakar Halilu Muazu said the Day is set aside world over to comemorate the immense benefits of Rivers and promote it’s protection, Conservation as well as stewardship.

According to him, the theme for this year’s event was selected is to give attention to protection of Rivers that are in healthy states while consciously striving to restore those that have been damaged in the past.

Engineer Muazu explained that the occasion also seek innovative ways of improving the quality and flow of river waters, maintain healthy environment for aquatic lives as well as ensure efficient hydrologic connectivity.

He urged communities to avoid dumping refuse, pollution, Defecation of sewage as well as Discharge of untreated effluents in to rivers and lakes.

In her Remark, the Federal Controller, Federal Ministry of Environment, Hajiya Safiya Muhammad stressed the need for ensuring cleanliness of water at all times.

The village Head of Ngurore, Alhaji Ahmadu Hamman Adama and that of Wuro Yanka, Alhaji Abubakar Babba Lawan thanked Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority Yola for celebrating the event in Ngurore and called on the authority to assist farmers to boost food production.

Highlight of the event was cultural Dance, symbolic River Cleaning as well as Memorial Tree planting at the Ngurore riverside.
