Adamawa Assembly passes 5 resolutions

The Adamawa State House of Assembly during its resumed plenary Monday unanimously passed five resolutions among these was a resolution calling on the state government to formulate policy to regulate early bulk sale of farm produce by farmers.

The adoption of the resolutions followed a motion presented by member representing Yola South Constituency Alhaji Kabiru Mijinyawa, on early of farm produce by farmers and its effects on food security in the State.

Kabiru Mijinyawa expressed worry on how local markets across the state are being flooded with farm produce, and how food a rain merchants from other states are buying up and taking these away pointing out it does not augur well the state.

He urged the legislature to impress on the executive arm to take necessary action to discourage farmers from selling off farm produce in bulk and be wary of these grain merchants.

According to him, harvest in some Local Government Areas in the northern part of the state below expectation due to in sufficient rainfall.

Contributing Separately on the motion the members representing Verre, Jada, Mbulo, Michika, Ganye, Gombi and Shelleng Constituencies called on the executive arm to vote substantial amount to buy up grains in large quantities, store and release these at time of scarcity and high price.

They also called on the House to mandate relevant House Standing Committees to liaise with relevant stakeholders to sensitize farmers on dangers inherent in selling off their farm produce in bulk, saying.

Speaker Aminu Iya Abbas while contributing noted that it is possible for government to formulate policy to check the trend vote amount to buy up excess grant the for storage, as well as mandate relevant committees and traditional rulers to sensitize   farmers on the situation.

Thereafter the House resolved to urge the state Government to as a matter of urgency impose high tariff on every truck conveying grains out of the state so as to discourage grain merchants from exploiting farmers.

The Lawmakers further appealed to the state government to mop up excess grain to ensure food security in the state year round.

They also urged government to embark on a sensitization exercise for farmers on the need to reserve substantial part of their harvest to meet their needs later in the year.

The Speaker directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the resolutions to the executive arm for necessary action.
