Governor Fintiri advocates uniform tenure of council chairmen

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri Tuesday advocated that the tenure office for elected local government council officers should be uniform throughout the country as the councils are also granted full administration and financial autonomy.

He stated this while declaring open the Northeast two days public hearing on constitution review for Adamawa, Taraba and Gombe states organised by the House of Representatives special committee in the Banquet Hall, Government House, Yola.

He equally called for domestication of international and regional human rights instruments specifically enacted for promotion and protection of women rights such as the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.

The Governor sought for movement of some matters such as quarantine, drugs and poisons as well as police variously under the exclusive list to the concurrent list for effective management and handling.

Governor Umaru Fintiri commended Members of the House of Representatives’ Special Committee on Constitution Review for embarking the patriotic and constitutional assignment at the time when the country is at a crossroads.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the Committee Mohammed Tahir Munguno who is the Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, noted that the public hearing is to assist the house in coming out with a draft constitution that will be of replica  the wishes of the masses.

Tahir Mungono revealed that the more for review of the nineteen ninety-nine constitution followed agitations from various parts of the country on the need for amendment of the Constitution to take into cognisance the present realities in Nigeria today.

The public hearing session had in attendance state government representatives, speakers and members of the states house of Assembly, organised labour Unions, political parties, women groups and organised youth groups from the three states.

Over thirty constitutional alteration bills will be considered during the public hearing under the thematic areas of electoral matters, local governments, judiciary, immunity, indigenship and residency as well as devolution of power among others.
