National Agency for Great Green Wall embarks on tree planting in Yola

National Agency for the Great Green Wall has embarked on a symbolic tree planting of trees in Yola against the backdrop of this year’s national commemoration.

The agency’s core mandate basically is to champion the establishment of afforestation; to combat desertification, land degradation and mitigate the effect of climate change.

The twenty twenty three theme for the Great Green Wall is “Push Back the Desert”.

Speaking during the Flagg off, at the Air Force Base Yola, the Director General, National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Doctor Yusuf Maina Bukar explained that the initiative aims to among others restore the ten thousand hectares of degraded land in the country.

Represented by Director, Information Communication Technology, ICT, of the agency Zainab Abubakar Suleiman, the the DG maintained that impact of the exercise is expected to change for good the lives of millions o the people who are suffering due to climate crisis.

He mentioned other advantages to include maintenance of soil fertility, increase water retention and provide habitant for all.

Doctor Main revealed that the day would forthwith be celebrated on the thirteenth of July annually pursuant to the creation of greener environment and conservation of nature.

On his part, the state coordinator, Great Green Wall, Mr Suleiman Abubakar who commended the Nigeria Air Force being its partner, noted that they have established about fifty kilometre shelter belt and five hundred woodlot in Adamawa.

Earlier in a welcome address, the Adamawa state commandant of the Nigerian Air Force, represented by the Squadron Leader, Abdullahi Musa Hassan, appreciated the Great Green Wall for giving them one thousand seedlings and pledged to nurse them well.

At the Lamido Adamawa Palace, the delegation intimated the royal father of their visit which was to involve him in restoring the sanctity of the Nigerian land by demonstrating the planting of the tree, making it as example to the monarchs in the state.

The Lamido who was represented by the Galadima Adamawa, Alhaji Mustapha Aminu expressed happiness with the visit and appreciated the delegation.
