IDP State Chairman Advocates for Building OF Houses For IDPs In Their LGAs

Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs in Adamawa State have urged the government to put mechanisms in place that will facilitate their return back to their ancestral homes.

The Adamawa State Chairman Internally Displaced Persons IDPs, Mallam Mana Mohammed who made the plea in an interview, explained that the IDPs are not supposed to stay longer than necessary in camps, stressing that the displaced persons are tired of staying in camps and are eager to go back to their homes.

He said the government should build houses to resettle IDPs in their local governments of origin and empower them financially rather than continuing to keep them in the camps.

Mallam Mohammed stated that currently there are over two hundred and thirty thousand IDPs in three formal camps and other informal camps spread across the state, adding that very soon another formal camp will be open in Labundo of Girei local government area.

The Chairman of the IDPs while lauding the efforts of governments in the Northeast for domesticating law that will support and take care of IDPs, called on the Federal government to domesticate national law that will apply to all states of the federation on issues regarding IDPs.

He decried that some people stigmatize IDPs and treated them like an outcast, however, appreciated traditional leaders, Human Rights Commission, and security agencies for ensuring that IDPs are treated equally with other members of the public.
